Is depression a matter of choice?

looking back, I feel that depression is a matter of choice.

I’ve healed today. And I wonder why I am not depressed anymore. I still have the same wreckening reasons that once made me feel depressed. So what has changed now? The main reason, I think, is, I refuse to be depressed anymore. I refuse.

*Leaving this note to let you know that I am sharing my life experience with people who have aspiring dreams. I don’t have much to offer for chronic complainers and those with negative energy, in fact, I try to stay away from them.

I’ve grown through depression, training myself to learn from every mistake, so that I get better. Instead of letting the misfortunes define me, I’ve learnt to accept my mistakes, my flaws and my misfortunes. Life is a constant journey of mountains and grassy plains; some days warm us with sunshine, others throw us right into a storm.

Growing through hard times, I’ve become stronger. Accepting my flaws has made me into a happier person. Now when I come across a rugged boulder, I climb it! The days where I sat by the base, whining about why everything seems like a problem has passed. After all, climbing the rugged boulder is a temporary pain until you arrive at the sea of wonderful opportunities.

Positive energy in life

On a bad day, when I feel down, I start paying more attention to my physical state to keep the energy levels up. I add a good amount of exercise to my routine when I’m stressed. I eat healthy. This involves adding more natural foods to my diet and avoiding processed food and alcohol. There’s a saying: We are what we eat!

Natural foods fuel up good energy and make you happier and healthier. Lately, spending more time in the gym and comforting exercises such as yoga have helped me balance my stress levels. I tune into calming music, and try to smile more.

There’s another saying, friends: You become what you wear on your face. So, smile!

Dealing with your debt

Sometimes I find it difficult to pay bills. But complaining about it takes me nowhere. So I deal with it. I move on from overthinking and keep myself occupied with reading more books, gaining more knowledge and experience, and by doing so, it helps me create more jobs, add more value to my clients, and develop products which would generate income. The key to come over debt is adding value to yourself and doing it constantly.

My pick: Grow through hard times, don’t just go through them. Constantly adding value to yourself helps you become debt free.

Don’t live to impress the world

I do not spend my money to impress other people, and showing off is not in my priority list. Simply, I do not care what others think of me, or my standards of living. Careless buying is unnecessary and harmful to the planet we live in. Instead, be mindful of your choices. I spend money on meaningful ways that add genuine value to my clients. In return, I can offer them an upgraded service at a better value.

Don’t counter with anger

I face challenges all day long. Where I work, and the field I am in, are brutally competitive. These are worlds bursting with excitement and continuous competition. In the beginning of my entrepreneur life, I took certain things personally, counting others with anger. Albeit being the winner in most of these occasions, I never found happiness.

Now I realise that it was a waste of energy, money and time. Now I try to embrace every situation with compassion. I give people more chances. If nothing works, I counter, but not with anger. Now I have nothing personal. There is always someone bigger, someone tougher if you want to win the battle. The key to win is, genuine compassion. Remember angry people are often depressed and that’s what fuels their anger. It’s a vicious cycle.

Thanks for your time,

Hasitha Rodrigo
